All steel headers are 2”x3/16” angle iron
Custom trusses of specific measurements and custom pitches available upon request.

We build angle iron for these three reasons:
1. The cost to the consumer is significantly less for a great product that is strong, durable and functional.
2. Our engineering meets and exceeds almost every application and use case that is common to our customers without issues.
3. Angle iron trusses can be fully coated with a protective paint or galvanized covering to prevent interior rust from condensation and potential truss failure over time.

No. Our trusses are priced as a complete package whether gable truss, lean-to truss, single slope or header truss but the bolt kit (center connection bolts if needed and post connection bolts) are to be added on if needed. We offer ½” lag bolt and ½” through bolt kits for post connection. All engineered trusses are required to be installed with through bolt kits. **would like to include a picture of a bolt kit here**

Our standard overhang for all trusses is 12” measured from the outside of the post parallel to the ground out to the eave. Typically, on our pole barn kits, our metal panels will extend out past the last eave board another 3-4” to protect the last eave board. We also offer a “Bobtail” or boxed eave style truss where the truss tail stops at the edge of the post and roof metal only extends 3-4” past the last eave board.

At this time, galvanized trusses are the only other coating offered upon request and require a custom quote for shipping and additional charges. Typical wait time for galvanized trusses is an additional 2 weeks from standard wait time. Our custom formulated standard coating is a premium grade exterior oil based black paint that our trusses are dipped into and allow to cure for an excellent quality coating for years to come.

Yes, upon request and with specific measurements/drawings provided by our customers. We do not make site visits for custom truss measurements and all custom trusses are non-refundable. Please contact us for more information.

OPEN POLE BARNS

Our DIY pole barn kits come with everything you need to install apart from bagged concrete and the tools/labor to put it up. This includes CCA pressure treated posts (6×6 or 8×8) with rebar, engineered trusses with bolt kits, #1 grade Southern Yellow Pine 2×6 lumber and pressure treated 1×6 fascia boards, 29g or 26g premium warrantied metal roof panels, ridge cap and standard SFS Wood Grip screws to match. Bagged concrete is not included due to excessive hauling weight but is available for purchase on site along with extra lumber, posts and upgrades.

Yes! We offer Wood Zac limited lifetime screws, exterior trim upgrades (Rake, Fascia, standard eave drip and our XL eave drip), ridge cap closure strips, gable and apron dress kits and more! Call and ask us how to make your standard pole barn kit look like a million bucks!

Yes! All our trusses are built to FL 140 mph standard engineered specifications and can be enclosed for standard storage, garage, hobby shop and other uses later. Different municipalities require other specifications to meet the building code, please let us know prior to purchase if you have intentions of enclosing your open pole barn kit so we can make sure you are set up with everything you need for a future project.

Yes! Our pole barns are intentionally designed for max use case and are versatile in application and additions. It is very easy to add lean-tos to both eave walls and, with some additional posts, to the gable walls as well.

We encourage all customers to contact your local building department to find out about local regulations and zoning laws prior to building any permanent structures. Generally, all permanent structures in Florida are required to be permitted by your building department and will more than likely require engineered plans with some exceptions for Agricultural exempt properties. If your pole barn was a Backwoods Buildings pole barn kit we can help. We cannot supply engineered plans for pole barn kits purchased or manufactured by other companies at this time.

Our maximum free span on our gable trusses currently is 50’. Our maximum free span on our Lean-To trusses (attached to existing building) or our Single Slope (free standing) lean-to trusses is 28’.

No. Typical open pole barn kits are designed and rated for a RISK 1 non-habitable structure. Without specific engineering and design, adding a foundation and walls to make a standard pole barn kit into a living space can be extremely dangerous and will not meet building code standards. We are equipped with a team of engineers that can design your next barndominium or pole barn home right from the beginning.

ENCLOSED BUILDINGS

We rely on engineering and superior framing methods using a 2×6 stud wall framing for all our enclosed buildings. This includes a pressure treated base plate and SYP studs 24” on center and a top plate for all eave and gable walls. Ballon framing (studs that connect to bottom plate and extend fully to top plate) is the best framing method and what we figure our enclosed kits with. We take it a step further and use 2×6 horizontal girts 36” OC to wrap the building for screw line and that extra measure of strength and stability. Our buildings have been built this way for 20+ years and have the greatest success among competitors, especially in our high wind velocity areas of Florida.

Absolutely! Although we don’t recommend it, we understand each project and budget is different and are happy to accommodate our clients. Simple 2×6 horizontal framing on a 24” center with additional posts in the gable end wall for support is common practice in northern states and available. Please make sure to clarify with a custom quote request that you would like “Simple Wall Framing” instead of our engineered wall framing.

We include all wall framing (stud walls/horizontal girts) for all walls listed, our signature King/Jack/Box header framing for all opening, wall panels, trim, screws and all doors, windows and garage doors listed in your custom quote. We include fascia and eave trim for standard overhang pole barns or rake and eave trim for our Bobtail designed buildings. Items you will need that are not included: Framing nails, concrete anchors, vinyl soffits, insulation tools and labor to install. Although not included vinyl soffit material and roll insulation are available as upgrades from Backwoods Buildings.

Yes. For local installations, our team only installs metal panels currently. Our DIY kits for enclosed buildings can be engineered for plywood sheathing and any type of siding desired (vinyl, Hardie board, brick, etc.). Backwoods Buildings will provide all the structural items as listed in a typical enclosed kit leaving the client to purchase the additional siding materials, underlayment and fasteners of their choice.

ENGINEERED PLANS

No. Unless specifically listed, our pole barn kits do not include engineered plans. All buildings have available engineered plans, either custom or typical, that can be added to your order for projects requiring permitting.

Prices vary based on each project. We provide general open pole barn plans in physical and digital format starting at $300 and up. We also design site specific plans for higher wind zones, states other than FL and for enclosed buildings. Prices for specific or custom engineering can range from $800-1500 depending on the project and details needed. Custom engineering for livable pole barn homes or Barndominiums start at $3500 and up.

Standard engineered plans for open pole barn plans are typically in stock in physical form and ready to ship out or pick up on the same day. Digital format open pole barn plans are expected to be ready in 5-10 business days from payment. Custom engineered plans for enclosures and other specific projects are expected to be completed in 10-15 business days.
